Put the word out in local papers and local web sites that you're looking for a 'fusion' or 'jazz/rock' situation. I'm sure someone will answer the ad eventually. It may take a year, but trust me, someone will answer it eventually. Of the ones who DO answer, more than half will be complete clowns/idiots, but I guarantee you will hook up with some like-minded players eventually. Anyone REALLY into fusion like Mahavishnu, Jeff Beck and Holdsworth is going to be at LEAST 40 if they grew up with it.
It's not easy to find guys here in Los Angeles that want to jam this stuff either believe it or not. Being from Canada originally, I didn't know many players in this town when I first moved here. But I kept looking and placed ads here and there and eventually several guys got in touch with me, and they're quite capable.
Beyond finding players though, it's difficult to find venues that will let you perform this stuff and even harder to find an audience that wants to hear it! LOL!
I'm playing this Monday at Canter's Deli on Fairfax if anyone is interested. We start at 9:30 and play for about an hour. Mostly jamming, and some Jeff Beck etc.

The age thing is all relative. I remember when a 27 year old was called the "old guy" in bands I played in.
Look, John Travolta, Jackie Chan, Dennis Quaid, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Belushi, Adam Ant, Yanni, Jermanine Jackson, Annie Lennox, Denzel Washington, Kevin Costner, and Eddie Van Halen have all hit 50.
These folks are hitting 50 within the next year; Arsenio Hall, Kelsey Grammer, Gary Sinise, Bruce Willis, Dana Carvey, Billy Bob thornton, Yo-Yo Ma, Billy Idol and Mel Gibson.
Don't let it slow you down, man!
(Vinnie will be 50 next year)

Drumming after 50 ?
Did you say 50 ?
My hero is Andy Rooney, and Jim Chapin...
They are models of the saying " It ain't over until the fat lady sings..."

Opportunities after 50.
I'll have you know I can still drum for minutes on end, once I get from my walker to the Roc N Soc and the nurse presses my sticks into my geriatric hands.
